OUR MISSION

The Furniture Bank started in 2015, we have grown and expanded since then, however our aims have stayed the same. We want to create positive change in our community in three ways:

Help create a carbon neutral community where the public have an easy and convenient way of donating furniture they no longer need to be recycled and reused. We also want the public to have a space where they can purchase pre loved furniture instead of having to buy new. We believe big individual changes are needed to produce big, positive environmental changes in our world. We want to provide a facility which helps the public make these individual changes.

For every sofa which is reused, instead of buying new, we are saving 90.14kg of C02 which is the equivalent of 4.479 trees taking in C02.

Help ensure everyone has access to the furniture they need. We believe no one should live in a home without the furniture they need to live a comfortable and stable life.  No child should have to sleep on the floor and no parent should have to sleep on a sofa. We provide good quality used furniture at heavily subsidised prices. Buttle UK, a child poverty charity, have estimated that up to 400,000 children are sleeping without a bed in the UK. We want to stop this happening in our local communities.

Help create an economy where everyone can get a paid job regardless of traditional barriers to work. We create paid placements and flexible employment opportunities for those who society sometimes see as ‘unemployable’. Our paid placements are an opportunity for those who are struggling to enter mainstream work or need to ease themselves into the working world. For example we offer placements for those coming from the youth probation service. As well as providing paid work we want to create a community for our staff where everyone feels part of our ‘family’

The Team

We currently have a team of 9 people working at Furniture Bank, not everyone will have their photo taken so you will have to meet some of us in person!

Some of us work full time, others part time. Our placements are set up to help ease mainly youngsters into the world of work. They go out on our vans or work in the warehouse.

Everyone who works with us is paid. We believe it is important to pay everyone for the work they do and ensure they have dignity in their work.
